One of 9 definitions of plague from websters.com: to trouble, annoy, or torment in any manner.
If Saturday wasn't troublesome, annoying, and tormenting, I wouldn't know how else to describe it. The first signs of trouble actually materialized Friday evening in the form of ants in our kitchen. Not just the pesky little ones, but the very large black make me shiver because they're so gross ones. After a very thorough cleaning of the kitchen (that revealed no apparent cause for said ant infestation), a very late dinner (courtesy of Papa John's - and no, we were not blessed with a heavenly manager of the meal preparation this time), and an even later bed time, the real fun started off at approximately 3:30 in the morning with Kaden crying in a very pained manner. Yeah, buddy, I'd cry if I woke up in a puddle of my own vomit and was still puking, too. Sigh. So it went off and on for the next 3 hours. Poor little guy.
Fortunately, his tummy finally settled down and then Mike left for work. The rain was pouring, and our backyard was starting to collect quite a bit of water. That's when I realized that Mike had left the lawn mower out. Good one. As the water level continued to rise, I came to the realization that if I didn't go move the mower it was going to end up submerged in the back yard. While the kids ate breakfast, I went back to our room to dig out Mike's boots and a hat. Notice mom mistake #1 there? Right, I left the children unattended for mere moments. Always a fatal flaw in conditions such as these. Kaden decided that he didn't want his cup of juice but wanted mom's glass of milk. And Cody attempted to thwart this and the maneuver ended in shattered glass all over the kitchen floor.
Cleaning commenced, while all 4 children kept complaining that they were done and wanted to get down. Um, no, none of you are wearing shoes and there are shards of glass all over the floor!
As I finished and went to place the broom and dustpan back, I heard

Oh, Dear God, please tell me that's not the sound I think it is. The sound of water dripping from my new roof and down onto my furnace. Great. Placed a cup to catch the drips and returned my attention to the lawn mower in the back yard. Lots more water had accumulated during the above events ... after adventures in water wading, I was able to rescue the mower and returned inside ... to continue killing ants. And Mike wonders why I want him home on the weekends?

ahh, a lovely start to the weekend indeed. and OMG your backyard! our garden flooded a bit, but nothing like that! and how in the world is your new roof leaking already?? we've had fun with ants this summer, too, in the family room of all places. ryan names them all "anty." and when we were at the dollar tree one night last week, i found a "bug cage" thing and scooped that up for him. had intended for him to use it outside, but now he likes to put the ants in it. boys.
Oh my word! I am so sorry to see all this flooding out there. I really hope that you guys are Ok. Should I send some dry dirt to try and absorb some of that? :)
